On the Licensing of Argument Conditionals

چکیده

Constructions where the clause introduced by wenn 'if' can have a double function in that it is an adverbial that provides the protasis of an implication as well as the propositional argument of a matrix predicate (argument conditionals). Unlike, for instance, Pesetsky's (1991) and Hinterwimmer's (2003) approaches which regard the conjunctions if or when as an "instruction" for the adverbial clause to move to an A-bar-position in order to become the restrictor of a quantifier that introduces the implication, this paper suggests that the conditional conjunction wenn encodes two implication types: the classical type: if σ is contingent and true, then τ(σ) and the preference type: if σ is contingent, then τ(σ). Whereas the adverbial function of the wenn-clause is indicated by the conjunction and by its possibility to be a left TP-adjunct, its argument function becomes especially apparent if it is right-adjoined to vP and me-commanded (in terms by Pesetsky) by a sentential proform which is in the canonical complement position, either es, ProPP or pro. Additionally, the paper discusses characteristic properties of the matrix predicates that license argument conditionals. It suggests that the classical implication type is allowed i. by predicates that embed question extensions (merken 'realize', ignorieren 'ignore', sich danach richten 'comply with) or ii. by predicates that do not embed questions but are either potentially factive or cognitent (akzeptieren 'accept', sich darüber freuen 'be glad', sich darauf stützen 'rely on'). The preference type is licensed by predicates that are compatible just with contingent propositions (vorziehen 'prefer').

The Fauconnier-Ladusaw analysis of negative polarity licensing (that NPIs are licensed in the scope of downward entailing operators) continues to be the benchmark theory of negative polarity. In this paper, I consider some of the moves that are needed to maintain its basic intuition in some recalcitrant arenas: negative polarity licensing by only, adversatives, superlatives, and conditionals. A Critical Examination of Ibn-Sina’s Theory of the Conditional Syllogism

This paper will examine Ibn Sina’s theory of the Conditional Syllogism from a purely logical point of view, and will lay bare the principles he adopted for founding his theory, and the reason why the newly introduced part of his logic remained undeveloped and eventually was removed from the texts of logic in the later Islamic tradition. As a preliminary discussion, this paper briefly examines I...

Experimental investigations of licensing environments for NPIs in English

In an experimental investigation of NPIs and their licensing conditions in German, Richter & Radó (2013) showed that Weak Licensors can partially license Strong NPIs. In two experiments we investigate these results for English. In Experiment 1 we empirically identify 16 Strong and 16 Weak NPIs by examining their acceptability when licensed by sentential negation and weak adverb licensors and fi...

The Coordination of Counterfactual Modality

This paper presents a new deductive argument for the strict conditional analysis of counterfactual conditionals, as against the dominant variably strict analysis due to Robert Stalnaker (1968) and David Lewis (1973). Counterfactual conditionals belong to a broader linguistic family of counterfactual modals. The argument offered here turns on facts about the logical interaction of counterfactual...
